High Tea in Amsterdam

But what exactly is a High Tea? The High Tea is founded in England and is a light meal that is consumed between 15:00 and 17:00. The story is that Anna, the 7th Duchess of Bedford (around 1840) was really hungry around 16:00 and could not wait until dinner. Her waiters prepared a light meal with sweet and savory bites and several kinds of teas.

Anna was a real trendsetter because many women in England took her example and the High Tea was born! Because there is a large variation of dishes, the High Tea is served on a shelf. It creates a cozy and charming look on your table. Throughout the years the High Tea got his modern twist and it is still a popular way of having a meal in the afternoon.

We have created a list for you in arbitrary order with the best locations for a High Tea in Amsterdam

An old-fashioned fireplace and candlelight creates a romantic atmosphere where you will feel comfortable. Bickers aan de Werf is situated at the marina.

There is a spacious place outside with wooden ramps where you can sit and watch the boats pass by, in the winter it is too cold but in the summer it is lovely. It gives you a great view and you can lay your boat at the dock.

Tassenmuseum Hendrikje

Tassenmuseum Hendrikje

Are you a real fashion lover? Than this is the place where you should enjoy your Fashion High Tea! In 1996 Hendrikje and Heinz Ivo opened their Tassenmuseum Hendrikje, full of bags from their private collection and in 2006 they move it to a fabulous 10th century house at the Herengracht. Throughout the years they have collected the most exclusive bags and they receive 85.000 visitors per year.
We can’t imagine what is better than combining the two addictions of (almost) every woman; cakes and bags!

To make it even more exclusive, the High Tea is served in one of the historical rooms where you really feel like a princess between the bags while you are sipping tea.

They take the bag theme very serious which you will notice during the High Tea, you will see that even the petit fours are in the shape of small Chanel Bags and Bette Midler’s red heels (which contains a soft cinnamon flavor). And don’t get us started about the Moschino bonbon with passion fruit filling…

Gartine

Gartine

In the middle of the busy centre of Amsterdam is a monumental 16th century house where you can have an amazing High Tea at Gartine.

The centerpiece in their decoration is the Portuguese chandelier and is antique, but that is not the only antique you will find here. Their tableware is all from antique markets and it creates a real English vibe.

What we love about this place is that they have their own kitchen garden and orchard where they grow their own fruit and vegetables. You can taste the passion and love in their dishes.
They do not only spend a lot of time on their garden, they also put effort in their pastries. Homemade pies and cake that get a lot of attention and love. They look great and taste even better!

Het Amstel Hotel

Het Amstel Hotel

The building speaks for itself, incredibly beautiful and classic! In the hart of the Amstel Hotel is the Amstel Lounge, a renewed lounge with dark blue walls and sparkling chandeliers.
The Amstel Lounge offers a great variety of tea’s. Our favorite is the Chocolat Spice Chai; a combination of cinnamon, cardamom, a lot of other spices and (yes o yes) chocolate milk.
You can really enjoy your High Tea here, for 4 courses to be exact.

The macarons melt on your tong, the sandwiches are fresh and tasteful and those delicious scones in the flavors vanilla & chocolate.. to die for!

We won’t give away too many details, but we wished this High Tea would never end! What an incredible explosion of different tastes and what an experience! It does come with a price tag but what we would really want is to have an High Tea here every week!
