Top 10: Best Vintage Fashion Shops

You either love it or you hate it: vintage shopping. Back in the days, when vintage was simply called ‘secondhand’, we were confined to thrift stores where you had to go through piles and piles of clothes in order to find that one special item that hopefully was waiting there for you.

Today, the whole experience of shopping for clothes that have been worn before is a completely different story. For one, we now have proper vintage stores with carefully selected collections. All clothes on sale are clean and presented in an orderly manner. Sometimes, it is even hard to tell the difference between a ‘normal’ clothing shop and a vintage shop!

Vintage shop in Amsterdam

It’s no secret that Amsterdam is perfect for shopping. Almost all big, international fashion chains have stores in Amsterdam now and you’ll find little boutiques and specialty shops on almost every corner.

But what if you love vintage shopping? Will you be able to find what you need in Amsterdam? Yes, you most certainly will. You just need to know where to go. Vintage shops tend to be hidden a bit, so unless you know where to look you are likely to miss them.

To prevent you from missing out on the best vintage fashion, we have made a little list for you that lets you in on all the vintage secrets of the city.

Best of Amsterdam presents: the best vintage fashion shops!

Wini Vintage shop

Wini Vintage

[/fusion_text]

In the Haarlemmerstraat, close to the Central Station, one of Amsterdam’s best kept vintage secrets is hidden: Wini Vintage. This is a perfect example of a vintage store that is not what you would expect a vintage store to be. This means no vintage smells (all clothes are washed and ironed before they hit the shelves) and everything is presented on hangers or is folded nicely.

The selection of clothes at Wini’s is timeless and prices are very reasonable, especially when you consider the high quality of all the items. Some nice split jeans are in ther stock as well.

While you won’t find itchy synthetic fabrics or weird cuts here, you can find beautiful cashmere sweaters, perfectly conditioned leather jackets, leather purses and felt hats. Recently, Wini also started selling some customized vintage clothing: vintage items whose cut is adjusted to today’s taste and fashion.

And for those who think vintage shopping isn’t vintage shopping without a little bit of rummaging, there is the special Monday Market where the shop’s window is filled with lots of clothing on a discount. Both men and women can shop at Wini Vintage.

Zipper

Zipper

Zipper is one of the best-known vintage shops in Amsterdam, but what a lot of people don’t know about Zipper is that it is a real family business. John and Agnes Giles founded it in 1979. They started with a store in the Jordaan, but soon they moved to the Huidenstraat, where they still are today.

Their two children are now co-owner and store manager and they have a second shop, in the Nieuwe Hoogstraat close to Waterlooplein.

You can also find Zipper with a stall at the weekly vintage market at Noordermarkt. All clothes come from the United States and are imported by the family itself. Zipper mostly sells printed sweatshirts and T-shirts, lots of denim and sportswear for both men and women. They also customize a lot of clothing for the special Zipper brand. The store has a lot of accessories like sunglasses, shoes and jewelry, too.

New things are added to the stores three times a week, so it pays to visit Zipper regularly.

Marbles Vintage

Marbles Vintage

If you are looking for a cool festival outfit, you really need to visit Marbles Vintage. This shop has three different locations spread around town and all stores are filled from floor to ceiling with the best vintage stuff.

Shopping here requires a bit of time, because you have to go through tightly packed racks of clothes here.

Luckily, the lovely staff is always willing to help you look if you have set your eye on something particular. Marbles sells women and men’s clothes, but the women’s selection is the biggest.

There is no focus on a certain period, so expect to find anything from sportswear to forties fashion or denim.

Tommy’s True Love

Tommy's True Love

Tommy Truelove is a special store. It is one of the few vintage stores in Amsterdam that solely sells vintage and antique clothing for men. The focus at Tommy’s is on classic suits, leather shoes and authentic working clothes.

Owner Tommy Page is a trained fashion designer with a very good eye. He selects each piece personally and makes sure everything is in perfect condition before he sells it.

The collection here is of very high quality (expect vintage suits by designers like Viktor & Rolf, but also original suits from for instance the forties). Guys looking for an original suit really should stop by at Tommy’s!

As said, there are no clothes here for women, but even so this shop is also a must visit for the ladies. It is very rare to find a place that lets you step back in time to an era when men dressed themselves with such grace. Prices here are very reasonable, especially considering what you get for it.

Bij Ons Vintage

Bij ons vintage 3

Bij Ons Vintage (Dutch for With us Vintage) is a vintage shop (with two locations!) for the more hardcore vintage shopper. In order to find a true gem here, you need a bit of focus and a bit of time.

Every corner of this shop is used and clothing racks could not possibly be any fuller.

But if you are willing to go for it, you can find beautiful things here that are very moderately priced. Like they say themselves: best prices for best quality. They stock loads of vintage denim, leather jackets, fur coats, dresses and T-shirts.

Besides clothing, Bij Ons Vintage also sells some vintage furniture and a lot of accessories.

Bis Vintage

Bis Vintage

Bis Vintage can be considered vintage heaven, for it really is not one but three shops, conveniently located right next to each other. All three shops have their own character or specialty.

The smallest of them is focused on more ‘traditional’ vintage clothing. So expect lots of sweaters, leather jackets, denim, dresses and fur coats.

The second shop is completely dedicated to vintage shoes. Yes, you read that correctly. Shop number two is completely filled with women’s and men’s vintage shoes, all of high quality and sorted by color/size.

But, it is not just shoes they sell. When you are lucky, you can find the perfect little leather bag and usually they have two extra racks of clothing.

Shop number three sells basics and army surplus. A large part of the collection is dead stock (old stock that has never been sold and therefore worn before). If you are looking for that classic wool knit navy sweater, the perfect Breton T-shirt or a classic rain coat, do come and have a look here. You might very well find what you are looking for.

Jutka & Riska

Jutka & Riska

These two sisters from Amsterdam personally select all vintage items for their four stores (they have two stores in Amsterdam, one in Haarlem and one in Antwerp).

They only sell vintage from big designers like Gucci, Chloe and Escada. Of course, all pieces are authentic.

Besides vintage, they also stock pieces from young designers and their own Jutka & Riska collection, often made from leftover fabrics from well known designers. Add to that a very large jewelry and accessories selection, consisting of things like necklaces, sunglasses and rings.

So Jutka & Riska really is about more than just vintage clothes!
