Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam

The Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam is the largest museum of modern and contemporary art and design in the Netherlands. After years of reconstructing, the museum opened its doors again for the public in 2012. The old building from 1885 now has a new, modern wing attached to it designed by architects Benthem Crouwel Architekten. The much talked about new wing, which has been given the nickname ‘the bathtub’ because of its resemblance to bathroom furniture, offers entrance to the museum, but also to the museum restaurant and the first Dutch branch of famous bookstore Walter König Buchhandlung. The building alone makes a visit to the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam worth while, even when you really are not a big art lover.

British artist like Damien Hirst, Gilbert & George and Tracy Emin are also present. Besides paintings the collection consists of design, applied arts, photography and video art. The old part of the building is reserved for the permanent display of the Stedelijk’s collection.
