Cafe Het Mandje is a special place. It was founded in 1927 by the lesbian Bet van Buuren, who was known for her love for the Dutch Royal family. This love for all things royal is still very common in the gay community. Cafe Het Mandje was the first place where gays and lesbians were free to express themselves as such.
Everyone is welcome, gay or straight, but never ever wear a tie to Cafe Het Mandje. It is an old tradition to cut the tie directly from the person who is wearing it. One look at the ceiling provides proof for this story: it is covered with cut off ties!
